Specialist Services

Our team is proud to hold a wide variety of higher qualifications, including Independent Prescribing (WGOS 5), Glaucoma and Medical Retina accreditation (WGOS 4), and Low Vision services (WGOS 3).

We also have extensive experience in fitting complex contact lenses, which means we can provide more tailored support when your eyes need something a little more specialised. Because of this extra training, we’re able to offer far more than routine eye examinations, whether NHS (WGOS) or private.

We provide a broad range of enhanced care services for patients who are eligible, giving you access to advanced support locally, with a familiar, friendly team you already know and trust. Our aim is to make sure you and your loved ones can receive the care you need close to home, without the stress or long waits that sometimes come with visiting larger clinics.

Of course, we hope you’ll never need these additional services, but if you ever do, we’ll be right here to help. Nothing is too much trouble, and we’re always happy to answer questions, explain your options, or guide you through what comes next.

If you’d like to know more about what we can offer, please just ask. We’re here for you every step of the way.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve — the vital connection between the eye and the brain — often due to increased pressure inside the eye. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent sight loss. It may affect one or both eyes, and early stages often have no noticeable symptoms, which is why regular eye examinations are so important.

The two most common types are chronic (slow developing) glaucoma, including primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), and acute (sudden onset) angle closure glaucoma, which requires urgent treatment.

While anyone can develop glaucoma, the risk is higher if you are over 40, very short- or long-sighted, of African, Caribbean, East Asian or South Asian origin, have diabetes or high blood pressure, have raised eye pressure (ocular hypertension), or have a close family history of the condition. If you are over 40 with a direct relative diagnosed with glaucoma, you may be entitled to a free NHS WGOS eye examination.

We screen all our patients for glaucoma as part of a comprehensive eye test. Chris and Anna also run dedicated glaucoma monitoring and filtering clinics within the practice, providing convenient, ongoing care for stable patients or those referred for further assessment.

Low Vision

A Low Vision (WGOS 3) service is a specialist NHS-funded assessment designed to support people whose sight cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or medical treatment. It is typically suitable for patients living with conditions such as Age-related macular degeneration, Glaucoma or Diabetic retinopathy.

During a WGOS 3 appointment, a specially trained optometrist carries out a detailed assessment of your remaining vision and discusses the practical difficulties you may be experiencing, such as reading, recognising faces, watching television, or managing everyday tasks. The focus is not just on eyesight measurements, but on helping you maintain independence and quality of life.

Following the assessment, we provide tailored advice and, where appropriate, prescribe magnifiers, specialist lighting, or other low vision aids to help you make the most of your sight. We also offer guidance on contrast enhancement, glare control, and strategies to improve confidence in daily activities.

If eligible, the service is funded by the NHS in Wales, and we can also refer or signpost you to local support services for additional assistance. Our aim is to provide compassionate, practical support to help you live well with reduced vision.

Independent Prescribing

Kate and Chris are highly trained IP Optometrists, who can assess, diagnose and management a wide range of conditions that affect the eyes or the area around the eyes without the need to refer you to your GP or an Ophthalmologist. This is a free, NHS service (WGOS 5) and you may be referred to them by Anna or Amber, or from another local Optometrist.

Some of the conditions that they treat most frequently are acute anterior uveitis, allergic eye disease, herpetic eye disease and infections of the cornea (keratitis) and conjunctiva (conjunctivitis).
