Your Child’s Vision Matters
At Parish Opticians, we believe great eye care starts from day 1. We regularly test the eyes of babies just a few weeks old, and we’re here to support your child’s vision as they grow, learn, and explore the world. Creating a comfortable, relaxed environment for children is something we truly care about, and we pride ourselves on adapting our approach as your child’s needs change.
Children under 16 are entitled to a free WGOS eye examination and financial support towards the cost of their spectacles, with many frame options available at no cost at all.
And because life with kids can be unpredictable, if their glasses get bent, broken, or sat on (which always happens), just bring them in, we’ll sort everything without any fuss.
Good spectacles are incredibly important for children. Clear, comfortable vision helps them learn at school, build confidence, and fully engage with the world around them. During every eye examination, we screen for key childhood conditions including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, eye turns (squint) and lazy eyes (amblyopia). Early signs of vision problems can include sitting very close to screens, frequent headaches, rubbing eyes, or struggling to concentrate at school. Early detection can have a huge impact on long‑term eye health, especially at a time when childhood myopia is on the rise across the UK. Supporting your child’s eye health today helps protect their vision for the future.
Our team is experienced, patient, and genuinely enjoys working with children—many of our own kids have grown up in the practice! (Some of them even work here)
Kate also has extensive experience working with neurodiverse patients, offering tailored, gentle appointments for those who may need extra time or reassurance. If it helps, you’re always welcome to pop in for a pre‑appointment visit so your child can get familiar with the space.
Eye Exams
Regular eye exams are essential for children’s vision health. Our team conducts thorough assessments, ensuring your child’s eyes are healthy and their vision is clear.
Eyewear Fittings
We provide personalized eyewear fittings with a great selection of stylish frames. Our staff will help your child choose the perfect pair that fits their face and style.
Myopia management
Myopia management plays an increasingly important role in addressing the rising prevalence of childhood myopia in the UK. Rather than simply prescribing single vision spectacles to correct blur, we are now able to offer products that focus on slowing myopic progression to reduce the long-term risk of sight-threatening conditions such as retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, and glaucoma.
We allow time for detailed discussions with parents and children about lifestyle factors, including increasing time spent outdoors and managing near work. Evidence-based treatment options commonly offered include specialist spectacle lenses such as Stellest (which Kate and Chris’s kids wear) or contact lenses
We have invested in equipment to measure axial length, allowing us to track physical changes (or not) in the eye, as well as the prescription.
We base all of the conversations on evidence and advice and support form our professional bodies, to ensure that we provide proactive care to support your child’s short and long term ocular health.
